Oberlin Great South Woods Planting

April 28 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Western Reserve Land Conservancy, Black River Audubon Society and other local organizations are proud to honor Oberlin’s rich history in the anti-slavery movement and united fight for liberty. The organizations will plant a bird-friendly Underground Railroad Freedom Garden at the Oberlin Great South Woods prairie property, a portion of which was owned by John and Delilah Copeland;  John being a former slave. John and Delilah’s son, John Anthony Copeland, took part in the Wellington Rescue and also took part in the fateful raid at Harpers Ferry. The garden will feature native trees, shrubs, and plants that played a role in the lives of enslaved people who travelled north looking for their freedom. A fruit tree will be planted in memory of the Copeland farm orchard.

Do you want to be a part of this important restoration project? Join us and students from Oberlin College for another planting day at the site!
